As the warm weather returns so does spending time outside! Unfortunately, this also means those pesky summer stains are back. No matter what you are doing outside, whether it be going to the park, playing baseball, or any other outdoor activity, stains are likely to occur. To help you out, we have created a how-to-guide with the best ways to remove two of the most common summer stains, grass and mud.

If these methods do not completely remove the stain take your garment to your local CD One Price location and we will do the rest!

Grass Stains

Step 1: Create a mixture of two parts water to one-part white vinegar and allow the stain to soak for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Use a clean white rag and carefully dab the stain.

Step 3: Wash the stained item using an enzyme-based laundry detergent. The enzymes in the detergent help to break down the proteins and lift the stain from the clothing.

Mud Stains

Step 1: Let the mud dry completely

Step 2: Gently scrape off excess dirt or mud on the garment

Step 3: Rub liquid detergent on the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Every 3-5 minutes rub the stain to aid the detergent in loosing remaining debris

Step 4: Apply a stain remover to the area and rub it in before putting your garment in the washer.

Step 5: Wash and dry your garment following the instructions on the tag.

FAQ

Why do grass and mud stains often appear together—and what makes them tough to remove?
Grass stains are a combination of pigments (chlorophyll, xanthophylls, carotenoids) that bind with fibers, while mud carries soil and debris. Together they form a composite stain that grips fabric more strongly than many simple spills.
What’s the first step I should take when a garment has a fresh grass or mud stain?
Let the mud dry (so you can brush off loose dirt), then gently scrape or shake off as much residue as possible. For grass, rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric to dilute the stain before applying any cleaning solution.
What home-pre-treatment methods work well for grass stains?
One effective method: mix 1 part white vinegar with 1 part water, apply to the stain, let sit ~30 minutes, then brush and rinse cold before washing. Studies found this outperformed many other DIY treatments.
How do I treat mud stains on clothes differently?
Remove as much dried mud as possible, pre-treat with a stain remover or liquid detergent targeting soil and pigment, gently brush into the fabric, then wash using the warmest safe cycle for the material.
After pre-treatment, what washing steps should I follow for best results?
Check the care label, wash the item in the warmest water safe for that fabric, use a quality detergent, and always check the stain before drying—heat will set any remaining traces of grass or mud permanently.
When the stain is set-in and previous attempts don’t work, what should I do?
For deeply set grass or mud stains, you may need to soak the item in a solution (like enzyme pre-soak or oxygen bleach for whites), then treat again before washing. Also consider professional cleaning for delicate or valuable garments.
